How you can have your summer fun, and your savings too

One of the wonderful things about being an education member is the summer. A chance to recharge, or renovate. Take a course, or take off. So, how can you embrace all that summer offers while protecting your financial well-being? Here are 3 practical tips to help you have your summer fun, and your savings too.

1. Set (and stick to) a budget. Having more ‘free time’ in July and August could potentially lead you to overspending if you’re not careful. This is why you should always have a separate spending budget in place to keep your finances on track for the summer months.

2. Stretch your money further by cashing in those loyalty rewards. With billions in unredeemed loyalty points in Canada, consider finally cashing in on any unused points you’ve racked up to enjoy discounted (or even free) meals, activities, transportation, or hotel stays this summer.

3. Make sure your money is still working hard while you’re on break. While you might be catching a bit of a respite over the summer- make sure your money is still working just as hard as you do during the school year. Get expert advice from a financial advisor.

3) Prep Payback Form
Occasional Teachers in daily and long-term assignments "...who are not able to receive their preparation payback period in the course of their assignment will be entitled to money in lieu." (Letter of Understanding #5)
The deadline to submit a claim for this current school year is July 2/25 at 4 PM. A link has been sent via TVDSB's Outlook -https://forms.office.com/r/CjuCVz6wib

4) Grid Pay for LTOs - Check Your Paystub-
Grid salary requires documentation of qualifications (QECO rating) and documentation proving previous post-certification teaching experience outside of TVDSB. This includes daily experience anywhere in Canada and international experience.
To show the evaluation of their qualifications, the LTO must provide the Board with a QECO Rating Statement or a card indicating their rating is in progress, prior to July 31st for retroactive adjustment.  Note that the process can take several weeks.

1) To obtain a QECO Rating, follow the instructions at www.qeco.on.ca or call QECO at 1-800-385-1030 and request an application form.

2) Once received, submit the results to TVDSB Staffing Officer, Jessica Grison Roeder - j.grisonroeder@tvdsb.ca before the July 31st deadline or forward a copy of the green QECO confirmation card if the application is in progress but will not be available by the due date.

N.B. The same July 31st deadline applies to proof of any post-certification teaching experience, outside of TVDSB. Recognized teaching experience is outlined in Article L7.08 of the Collective Agreement.
